EDIT 2: I'm going to call it a day everyone. Thank you all so much for your questions! Enjoy the rest of your day.

EDIT: I originally scheduled this AMA until 3, so I'm gonna stick around and answer any last minute questions until about 3:30 then we'll call it a day.

I am Solomon Rajput, a 27-year-old medical student taking a leave of absence to run for the U.S. House of Representatives because the establishment has totally failed us. The only thing they know how to do is to think small. But it’s that same small thinking that has gotten us into this mess in the first place. We all know now that we can’t keep putting bandaids on our broken systems and expecting things to change. We need bold policies to address our issues at a structural level.

We've begged and pleaded with our politicians to act, but they've ignored us time and time again. We can only beg for so long. By now it's clear that our politicians will never act, and if we want to fix our broken systems we have to go do it ourselves. We're done waiting.

I am running in Michigan's 12th congressional district, which includes Ann Arbor, Ypsilanti, Dearborn, and the Downriver area.

Our election is on August 4th.

I am running as a progressive Democrat, and my four main policies are:

  1. A Green New Deal
  2. College for All and Student Debt Elimination
  3. Medicare for All
  4. No corporate money in politics

I also support abolishing ICE, universal childcare, abolishing for-profit prisons, and standing with the people of Palestine with a two-state solution.

Due to this Covid-19 crisis, I am fully supporting www.rentstrike2020.org. Our core demands are freezing rent, utility, and mortgage payments for the duration of this crisis. We have a petition that has been signed by 2 million people nationwide, and RentStrike2020 is a national organization that is currently organizing with tenants organizations, immigration organizations, and other grassroots orgs to create a mutual aid fund and give power to the working class. Go to www.rentstrike2020.org to sign the petition for your state.

My opponent is Congresswoman Debbie Dingell. She is a centrist who has taken almost 2 million dollars from corporate PACs. She doesn't support the Green New Deal or making college free. Her family has held this seat for 85 years straight. It is the longest dynasty in American Political history.

Based on the "progress" of AOC and the politicians using the 2020 Census to eliminate her seat, what makes you think getting in with her same ideals is a good idea?

I am running on the policies I believe are important and what this country needs. I'm not here to play games or to worry about staying in power. I'm here to fight for what I think is right and whatever political consequences come from that, I'm ok with that.

Corporate Democrats and their supporters in a nutshell: Free public college at 80 billion a year: HOW ARE YOU GOING TO PAY FOR THAT?? WHERE IS ALL THE MONEY GOING TO COME FROM?? SO PIE IN THE SKY. WE NEED PRACTICAL SOLUTIONS.

Increasing Trump’s already bloated defense budget by over 100 billion dollars during the course of his term, spend trillions on a corporate bailout: sound of crickets

Vote_Rajput_4_MI-122 karma

I truly can't wait to go to Congress and say "well....how are you going to pay for that?" when they propose dumb shit like corporate tax cuts or increasing the bloated military budget

How do you anticipate overcoming the problem of old 'set-in-their-ways' people running the government and being voted in? Unfortunately, the only thing I agree with you on is abolishing corporate money in politics. I would like you to be voted in though, simply for the change in age. I don't want to see more 75 year old people who have no idea how email works in politcs.

Thanks for the question! I appreciate your support, and hope to win you over on the many other issues I'm running on. I totally understand where you're coming from.

I just believe that government should reflect the people. It should reflect the rich diversity our population has to offer. I want to see old and young, rich and poor, white and black, all working together to build a better tomorrow.

Young people have been passed over for a long time. I think we need to start making our voices heard, and that's one of the reasons why I'm running! When it comes to dealing with older colleagues, I'll just try to stress our commonalities.

Most of these people have children and even grandchildren. These are people they love and want to see have a bright future. There is therefore no such thing as a "young/old person's issue". We're all in this together. When we realize that, we will make progress!

So many people are saying “there are experts in politics taking care of it, YOURE under qualified”

What the fuck experts are taking care of anything?

Literally what the fuck are you on about.

Vote_Rajput_4_MI-124 karma

Preach bro

I decided to run literally because the establishment has failed us and we're done waiting on them to do something about our problems

Lots of ambition but no plans. You've also prioritized a green deal before Medicare.

Why would anyone vote for you?

The incidence of corporation tax disproportionately falls on low earners by suppressing wages. How do you justify taxing the poor in order to give the rich free education and the most comprehensive free healthcare in the world? Would it not be better to support the policies proposed by the Joe Biden campaign?

Vote_Rajput_4_MI-122 karma

We support a $15 minimum wage so that one job is enough and everyone in this country who works can live in dignity. Currently we have starvation wages where people have to work 2 or 3 jobs just to survive. In recent years corporations have made record profits. They're not just barely getting by. They have all this money that they are hoarding because their guiding principle is greed. That money should be shared with the workers who helped them create such wealth.

Hey, I’m 26 and looking to get into politics. I didn’t graduate with a degree in the field or have any connections as of now. What do you think would be the best steps to head in that direction?

Get involved with your local grassroots organizations like DSA, Sunrise Movement, Youth Climate Strike, your local tenants unions, ect. Grassroots orgs are the foundation of change, and without them we would be unable to advance any major legislation.

European here, so not that much knowledge of US politics, but I'm wondering how you see your chances of winning? As a 34 year old I would love to see young people taking over

Good luck! Hope you'll win!

Vote_Rajput_4_MI-12-5 karma

Hey thanks for the question! We're trying a different strategy to win. The establishment relies on tons of money in order to reach out to voters by paying for advertisement. Our strategy to win is to build a huge army of young people to talk to all the voters in our congressional district. We've built an ENORMOUS army of young people and we are reaching many, many voters in our district. Our grassroots effort is huge and I think we actually have a really good chance of winning given how big our army is and how many people we are reaching out to :)

I would say no, they do not. Most of the time, women wear makeup for themselves. The reality is that most men do not appreciate a perfectly sharp cat eye or impeccably blended eyeshadow. Makeup is artistry, and most of the time it's a way for women, men and non-binary folks who wear it to express themselves and spend time on themselves.

gowings89-19 karma

I identify as a potatokin, are you saying makeup isn't for me?

Vote_Rajput_4_MI-127 karma

Of course makeup is for you if you want to wear it! It's a personal choice.
