My short bio: It was only the first week of the new year, and I was already fed up and grumpy. I had a pile of paperwork to sort through, a backlog of work to get done and more than a few bills to pay. I was asked to stop everything and urgently draw a cute greeting card for a friend (as a favour... of course) and before I knew it I had drawn an angry duckling saying QUACK F***ING QUACK. It made me laugh out loud and I shared it online.

It quickly became apparent that it was making a few other people smile too (You probably met Grumpy Pig, Grumpy Sloth or Grumpy Bear here on Reddit), and so a promise was made. No matter what else life would bring in 2020, I would set aside enough time each day to draw and post a daily grumpy animal. At the end of the year, I would have 366 grumpy animals to put in a hardback coffee table book and a smile on my face. Tomorrow will be day 30. I share the daily grumpy animal on instagram, twitter and try to keep them all indexed right here on reddit at the same time every day.

My Proof: I'm beastflaps on twitter (also I'm verified as Beastflaps on /r/funny and /r/comics) :)

payitforwards29 karma

-SENDHELP-12 karma

Ooh i rather like that idea that sounds cute

payitforwards13 karma

keep your eye out

lfantine2 karma

Do you like pachyderms?

payitforwards5 karma

sure. (quickly googles pachyderms) oh elephants I’ve just done a grumpy elephant on day 19

lfantine2 karma

I'm really enjoying the series.

payitforwards2 karma

I have no idea what I’ll do with season 2 ;)

WizardessUnishi17 karma

What is your favorite animal?

payitforwards41 karma

a horse sized duck

Gummothedilf4 karma

What about a duck sized horse?

payitforwards9 karma

only if I can have a hundred of them

rzor8915 karma

how weird do you plan to get with your animal choices as the year goes?

payitforwards28 karma

I don't want to give too much away, but there's quite a lot of scope when you think of extinct animals, species of animals, and maybe even a spattering of fictional. We'll see how desperate I get. But for now I have more than enough regular animals to keep me busy. The only trick is getting them to be grumpy and funny and relevant to that particular animal too :) (edit:typo)

WizardessUnishi11 karma

Who are your biggest influences when it comes to art?

payitforwards20 karma

At the moment I love Nathan Pyle's Strange Planet, the subtle comedy is perfect. I made a joke that I want to be him when I grow up (I'm 42). I think influences for this type of art (comic/comical) comes from a little bit of everywhere in life, and you have to give a little bit of yourself so that people can relate.

thxxx13378 karma

Can you draw me a grumpy lobster tomorrow?

payitforwards18 karma

not tomorrow sorry, but yes, one of these days. I have to draw whatever I feel the urge to draw on that day otherwise it becomes just a task and my brain will turn against the task and self destruct (or something) and the reason I started doing it was to break out of the habit of procrastinating and just get something done, bit by bit, day by day.

sojayn8 karma

Do you have any challenges in mind?

I’ll start- bet you can’t draw a grumpy quokka!!

payitforwards11 karma

hey did you say that before or is there a weird quokka fan club around here? I bet I can ;) PS what the heck's a quokka?

sojayn8 karma

They are the heckin cutest animals in australia! Have fun trying not to smile (placeholder for image link edit later)image link

payitforwards14 karma

jebus h cripes, I'm going to have to do that one immediately I have just the thing that I wanted to give a cute animal to say but couldn't think of anything cute enough for what I had in mind.

Zaunpfahl426 karma

what about an axolotl? (image)
they can be kind of cute, look mostly weird and sometimes mean, and have amazing abilities. and unfortunately on the brink of extinction in the wild :( edit: I'm bad at formatting

payitforwards3 karma

I need to read up on this beast

9yroldupvotegiver7 karma

Can you do an aye-aye? They'd be god for grumpy animals. In case you didn't know they have VERY long middle fingers; flipping the bird!

payitforwards4 karma

I will probably have to then.

Hepcatoy7 karma

So many questions....

Which animal in nature is cursed with resting bitch face?

Which animal in its natural habitat is the grumpiest?

Which animal is the most challenging to draw, grumpy or not.

Thank you for your time, and good luck with the rest of your project!

payitforwards6 karma

I thought the sloth's face was quite glum when I studied it. a shark also has that down-turned grin. I don't feel qualified to answer that yet, but I'm sure I'll meet them along the way. I'd say an Alpaca is the toughest so far, only because a caricature of one just looks like a real one.

ondaheightsofdespair7 karma

Have you ever considered that even spiders may get tangled in their own webs?

payitforwards8 karma

shush don't use up my options, I need to fill out a whole year ;)

WizardessUnishi6 karma

Do you have any pets?

payitforwards15 karma

yes. but calling her a pet is extreme. we feed and give attention to a dog that will let us get on with our lives if we do.

Some_Asshole_Said4 karma

Does the (artist) username check out?

payitforwards7 karma

which one beastflaps or payitforwards? both do. BeastFlaps because I draw Beasts in a flap, and payitforwards because just a couple weeks ago I gave a gift to a stranger and the very next day just by happenstance my coworker surprised me with a free breakfast meal. what are the chances of that. it made my day.

pokey_bum_wannk3 karma

When did you start drawing and did you ever consider realism or always cartoons?

payitforwards7 karma

when I was a child apparently. always remember having a pencil and paper nearby. mainly because it was cheaper/easier than paints. I used to do portraits (for fun). I only really remember one or two of them being any good. I think I get bored quite easily and I need to either be interested in the subject matter or see the end result quite quickly. which is why cartoons suit me currently

viomoo3 karma

Do you have a few in reserve or are you literally doing one a day?

P.S. thanks for all the pics! You should put the book up for sale once it's completed!

payitforwards7 karma

I draw at roughly the same time every day when I get an hour to myself in the house. I have nothing in reserve. running in real-time mode heh heh

keepit420peace3 karma

Does your sarcasm ever get you into trouble? I love your sense of humor but i can definitely see how some might not agree. Also the sloth helped me in a really bad day so im here to say thanks!!

payitforwards3 karma

I’m not usually sarcastic. I use it only in the safe space of grumpy animals. no trouble yet, but there’s plenty of days left for that. glad mr sloth helped.

Zaunpfahl423 karma

do you think you can keep up with the grumpy theme?
why didn't you go with happy animals to brighten up your own (and our) day?

payitforwards5 karma

because I can vent through the medium of animalgrump. happy is maybe too safe. grumpy is where the action is

9yroldupvotegiver3 karma

Will you do dinos?

payitforwards5 karma

yes a little bit. I did a quick fun sized dino just recently

9yroldupvotegiver3 karma

Do you think you'll run out of ideas?

payitforwards4 karma

never. ;) I'm stubborn enough to see it through one way or another and my fool brain was already panicking me awake the other night thinking what next year's daily drawings could be about when the whole animal thing is behind us. slightly alarmed robots?

WizardessUnishi3 karma

What is your favorite animated TV show? Why?

payitforwards11 karma

Ren & Stimpy. Always. Because playing hide and Seek and "coooooming ready or not, Stimpy where are yoooou?" (muffled): "I'm in the clooooset!"

RazorNion2 karma

Which of these animals drawn so far could you relate to?

payitforwards3 karma

I’d have to say the duckling because that is literally how I felt at the time

firebat452 karma

Can you draw a grumpy quokka?

payitforwards3 karma

YES I definitely will

teattle2 karma

Don't stop. I saw the first one, although I don't see it every day. I started drawing again last summer and stopped and I couldn't get back on the horse since. Did you plan out some of those dailys ahead of time?

payitforwards5 karma

I won’t stop. You start. :) no I’m just taking it day by day. sometimes I sit for ages looking at a blank page other days I can’t wait to get started because I know exactly what I’m going to draw.

whiiskeypapii1 karma

Since you didn’t actually start on the first, did you go back and draw extras to make it true?

payitforwards1 karma

I have to catch up with the “missing 6 days” so that I can end on december 31st rather than January 6th :) I can do that this month

Norgeroff1 karma

What color is your toothbrush?
