We are F-Secure Freedome VPN. We have created an app for protecting your online privacy. Ask us anything!
Greetings redditors! We are F-Secure Freedome, a startup team inside a leading online security company from Helsinki, Finland. We design and develop Freedome VPN, an app which helps you protect your online privacy and be as anonymous and private as you want to by encrypting your traffic and hiding your real location.
Our proof: https://twitter.com/FreedomeVPN/status/672002221643575296
We will be happy to answer whatever we can from the whole spectrum of privacy and VPN related questions. Or whatever comes to mind really!
We’ll start answering questions at 12 PM EST and continue until 1 PM EST.
EDIT: We are done for now, but we'll continue answering to your questions later. Thanks for all the great questions!
Best, Topi, on behalf of the entire Freedome VPN team
FreedomeVPN17 karma
First question, nice!
Technically, since all data goes through our VPN servers, the VPN servers have access to some of the information (unless it is encrypted otherwise by a https:// web server, or another application using encryption, such as Skype). Just like any VPN server, or your local network operator when you're not using a VPN.
But no, we don't log or otherwise have tools to access to any of your surfing data. No access to any websites you visit or what you do when you're online. We also don't have any identity information on hand to find your traffic (we don't really know who our users are).
InfiniteBlink27 karma
Do you feed your vpn server logs to a log manager or SIEM? If so, you might be collecting data
FreedomeVPN8 karma
There's a rather simple centralised, secured syslog server (syslog over TLS), but I wouldn't call it SIEM. Only a few employees have access to it. It's there mostly as a backup, so that we have audit logs in case one of our servers would be hacked or abused, so that we have some method to investigate what happened. These things happen even to the best of us at times, and it's good to be prepared. Standard operating practice at every security-minded house.
The thing we never log is your traffic that goes through our servers. No proxy or NAT session logs are in place.
Naturally, there is one exception to that rule: When Tracker Mapper is enabled by an user, blocked HTTP tracking attempts, malicious blocked URLs, and their referring URLs (hostname only), are stored in a database for a few days, so that we can show in Tracker Mapper view what we blocked. Tracker Mapper needs to be enabled manually by the user, it can be disabled and the data deleted by the user, and it gets disabled automatically after 24 hours and the data expired after 3 days if the user doesn't turn it off before that. In any case, Freedome does not know who the end user is. This feature was the number 1 end-user request – people want to see what we're protecting against, not just a boring counter saying how many times we blocked something.
KingCrap10 karma
As you provide virtual locations around the world, there must be some kind of diversity between those servers. I know you guarantee for the level of privacy at your partners. But should user be aware such a thing as national laws, which could have an effect on the level of privacy? I see that on some servers there is kind of a data-limit? Any kind of marking of those servers? or do users just simply have to guess?
FreedomeVPN9 karma
Right, national laws have their effects. In many countries, due to DMCA and similar laws, we have to make a best-effort automated attempt to limit or stop BitTorrent and other peer-to-peer file sharing traffic. Otherwise our local network providers in those countries get too upset at us. We have published a list of sites where BitTorrent is limited.
There are no other data limits in place.
skatastic5713 karma
This seems to be unique to you guys. Most other VPN providers that I'm aware of don't have this restriction. How did you guys get saddled with it?
edit: Wow, just went to the website to see if there was any info there and I did find out that they're more expensive than other VPN services like Private Internet Access.
KiwiFear2 karma
Both cyberghost and pia limit BitTorrent to certain regions, or not-USA at the minimum. This goes for most vpn providers afaik
FreedomeVPN3 karma
Right, I am under the impression that this is pretty common within VPN providers. Some providers also have data transfer limits (throttle or cap) which make it a bit difficult to do torrents.
therearesomewhocallm2 karma
Wait, so that means you must be doing some sort of packet inspection, right? Even if you aren't keeping logs I still don't really like the idea of a third party inspecting the data I'm passing to a second party.
Or am I misunderstanding how this is done?
FreedomeVPN5 karma
Correct – quite obviously, clairvoyance aside, there's no other way to do it. We have a bit of software doing packet header inspection and traffic pattern analysis to figure out if an user is running BitTorrent, and when it's detected, that session gets a "slightly" restricted firewall profile. It doesn't need to inspect the data payload, just headers. Traffic pattern analysis is needed to detect encrypted BitTorrent.
The Antitracking and Browsing protection features also need to, quite naturally, look up the requested URLs from our URL reputation database, so that it knows which requests to block, or when to trim HTTP cookies. A bit of inspection is needed to implement all these features, but it doesn't need to go into the data being passed.
LABoston10 karma
Thanks for being here, I just wanted to ask, I'm a total internet dumb-dumb, but I understand VPNs help keep people anonymous by doing something to their IP address.
Does a regular Joe-Schmoe like myself need this service? More importantly, why F-Secure Freedome?
Sorry if this is a silly question, I was just curious as to why you provide the service you do, and how you started. Thanks!
FreedomeVPN11 karma
First off, it is not a silly question - we'd hope even more people would ask this question.
There are many benefits to using a VPN. For example, if you're connecting to public wi-fis, your traffic can be snooped easily and you can even be hacked in the worst case. Nobody's safe, so in our opinion anyone connecting to public wi-fis should use a VPN.
When going through our VPN, your IP address is known only by us and we are encrypting your traffic so the sites you are connecting to won't see your real IP address and identify you, and anyone between your computer and the site won't see your traffic (and this includes your internet service provider, too). Additionally, Freedome is blocking tracking attempts and malicious websites. Occasionally people also want to hide the country they are coming from, too, so you can change your geolocation.
If you want to be private, untrackable and anonymous, a VPN is needed. We recommend Freedome both for everyday users and power users because of its ease of use (just one big button to press!) and its additional features compared to competing VPN services such as tracking blocking. Also, we're pretty competitively priced. Try out for free for 14 days and you'll see whether we live up to our promises.
FreedomeVPN2 karma
- Freedome doesn't slow down your Internet access quite as much. TOR routes your traffic through a number of nodes around the wold, mostly run by volunteers. The number of hops around the TOR network adds latency, and the TOR nodes have bandwidth limits (configured and otherwise). With Freedome there's just one hop through our gateway, and we do our best to make them run fast – we've got people who are responsible for just that, and automated monitoring and alarms set up to keep an eye on the performance. Naturally, if you wish to have the onion routing feature, hops around the world, then TOR is the thing for you, not Freedome.
- We do have some value-added services on top: Browsing protection (prevents accidental browsing to known malicious sites), Antitracking (blocks network access to known analytics services, trims cookies from ad network requests, generally enhancing privacy).
- There are some documented cases where TOR exit nodes have had "additional features", injecting malware. Anyone can volunteer and set up a new TOR node at any time, and start doing things like that, monitor your traffic or such. Some people may be worried about activities like this, and may trust us to behave better. We certainly try our best to do the right thing and be trustworthy – it's in our best commercial interest and gives a fuzzy warm feeling.

Is/will there ever be legal ramification for VPN services? ie. Can you guys get into hot water for covering peoples tracks?
FreedomeVPN7 karma
We don't sell or market our product in countries where VPN's are illegal. Also we forbid in our license agreement for people to use our service for illegal purposes. There have always been and will always be people who misuse technology, and we do what we can to mitigate that. But I guess there is always a possibility we can get into hot water, yeah.

I'm a happy freedome user, but is your private search function really safe, seeing as it is "powered by Google"?
FreedomeVPN4 karma
We've chosen to work with Google because generally their search is considered the best in industry.
There is no link between your google sessions (in case you are logged in to google) and F-Secure search, e.g. your F-Secure searches are not stored to google search history.
Please do note also that we do strongly recommend using private browsing / incognito mode for staying completely private with your searches (ref https://freedome.f-secure.com/search/ )

Thank you for your great work! Whats going on with Freedome for iOS since iOS 9? Whatsapp messages not coming trough when device on sleep etc. I am in Freedome for iOS beta, and new setting to keep connection up all time is not really solving the problem. Losing connection completely sometimes after opening iPhone from sleep.
FreedomeVPN8 karma
Thanks, we're glad you like it!
On iOS, we're basically configuring the iOS built-in VPN client to connect to the Freedome VPN server. Unfortunately iOS 9 broke something in the VPN integration with push notifications, and we do not have much control about it if it misbehaves. We looked into this issue with a debugger, and it seems like Whatsapp actually crashes as a result when an incoming message pops up with the VPN being down. The VPN should be brought up automatically, so that Whatsapp could communicate with its servers, but it does not. We have filed bug tickets to Apple (and so have some other VPN vendors), and tried to communicate this to Whatsapp too.
Did the new setting (keep VPN on at all times) help at all? Some testers have reported positive results with it.
Jesuqq5 karma
Yes it keeps now connected even when device is at sleep. However now the problem starts when you unlock the phone and start using it. Connection seems to cut at this point. When I open freedome app the connection animation just keeps spinning. Whatsapp not connecting, web pages not loading etc. Only way to go is to disconnect freedome and connect back again.
FreedomeVPN3 karma
Oh, dang. It works a bit better than that on my personal device, anyway (iPhone 6/iOS 9.2). We'll have to keep debugging that, but the real fix needs to be done in iOS VPN code.

If my friends dog downloads illegal material, movies and stuff, using Freedome, can he be tracked and identified?
FreedomeVPN7 karma
The traffic is encrypted and the browsing data is not connected to your IP. However, our TOS forbid using Freedome for illegal purposes - even if you were a canine.
We suggest your friend could post videos of her/his incredible computer-using hacker dog on YouTube. They'd be popular. Then, monetize the videos, get dog food sponsorships and legally buy all the Lassie films her/his furry companion wants.

I've been looking at getting a VPN for a while now. How would you say your services stacks up against other anonymous VPN services like Private Internet Access, TorGuard, IP Vanish, etc?
What makes your service stand out from your competitors?
Where do you see yourself in 5 years?
FreedomeVPN1 karma
I guess we could say the same thing we said to /u/B4UGOTHERE... We suggest you could download it and try it out yourself. We've got a free 14 day trial, no credit card or registration needed.
What sets us apart from the other VPNs is the ease of use (push of a button and you're protected!), the additional features (tracking blocking, malicious webpage protection, Tracker Mapper visualizing who is trying to track you and how they are connected to each other) and the fact that F-Secure is a trusted player in the information security market with a very long history. (Go ahead, do a quick search.) Also, we're based in Finland, so we're bound by very strict privacy laws.
Hmm, where do we see ourselves in 5 years? We've got 5 more years time to put in our product development, so Freedome should be even better then. We will still be fighting for digital freedom. We are trying to make sure 2020 won't look like Orwellian 1984.
ptd1631 karma
We are trying to make sure 2020 won't look like Orwellian 1984.
Keep doing what you're doing then good sir.
And question I forgot to ask last time; how much of a speed penalty does your service incur? For example, if one had a 100 Mbps connection, what would it become once one enables your service?
FreedomeVPN1 karma
The rate will depend on many factors, but we've got quite a bit of bandwidth. Take the free trial and try for yourself.
Inofor1 karma
It chops in quite a bit. I've got a 100Mbps connection in Finland. Through the Espoo access point the speed is a lot lower. I should note that over 20Mbps is an unusually high speed for this VPN. It's probably because it's night time here in Finland right now. I've been using Freedome for a few months now. The speed it gives me has usually been between some 10 and 15 Mbps. I would wager that this means that by an optimistic estimate (about 90Mbps divided by the higher end of the average: 15Mbps) the performance of a 100Mbps connection would be divided by about six assuming your connectivity is on the same level as mine.
FreedomeVPN2 karma
We're sorry to hear you've had such a big hit. Our own experiences are way more positive. One of us personally tested this yesterday with a 100M consumer connection. The connection was 93Mbps without VPN and 87 with VPN with the Espoo node and 37 to the Miami node. Of course, a lot depends on many factors. Download speed may vary per platform, per node you are connected to, per operator, per time of day and many other things. We recommend connecting to another server if you are having poor performance.
We did an experiment with page load speeds - our tracking protection helps the download speed in many cases: https://labsblog.f-secure.com/2015/09/11/freedome-tracking-protection-comparison/
As always, we recommend everyone to try for yourself - we've got a free trial available.

FreedomeVPN1 karma
Do you keep our Visa information/use it for identify the user?
Only for our own estore we do keep it (e.g. AppStores don't transmit it to us) and we do not use that for user identifications. Any such information stays in the estore system which is totally separate from Freedome.
Do you keep a log and if yes what exactly inside the log?
We do not keep any persistent log.

Not persistent sounds like "yeah, we keep them datas for like 6 months, but hey, it's not persistent!"
Your logging VPN is shit and you should feel shit.
FreedomeVPN5 karma
Nothing is collected, stored and available for later analyses.
There's always some in memory stuff that could be considered "a log" so simply "no" is technically perhaps a bit inaccurate and I chose not to use that in original response, but beyond such there's no log.

Can you extend a subscription from 3 devices to 5 devices? Are you considering launching a physical device (or preferably partnership with some top of line router maker) which has Freedome?
FreedomeVPN1 karma
Currently there's no possibility to upgrade subscription from 3 to 5 devices. You can of course use 30-day money back guarantee to cancel the 3 device subscription and purchase the 5 device subscription, or just purchase additional 3 device license. If you have purchased Freedome from app store you can use it in all devices using the same appleid. Similarly, purchases from Google Play Store can be used in devices registered using the same play store account.
ClutchSlave1 karma
Yeah, I know, but it's not really ideal. I like how you sidestepped my other question, which means you haven't either thought of that or you are actually doing something like that.
I personally would like to see you guys integrating your stuff with Asus routers (or Asuswrt-Merlin, which I use). Freedome is not really usable with hardware devices currently like Chromecast.

Is it possible to view a list of the sites classified as harmful by Freedome? In my case, Freedome reports 16 harmful sites blocked, for example.
FreedomeVPN7 karma
Hey, Yes it is possible, currently only on Pc and Mac with the Tracker Mapper feature, which lets you temporarily record your tracking attempts and harmful sites, and view them on a visual map. This feature is currently entering beta phase on mobile and will be released soon and iOS and Android as well.
KingCrap2 karma
Will it be possible only to see which site if marked a harmful.. or can you see why its considered harmful too?
FreedomeVPN6 karma
It's possible only to see which site is marked as harmful but not the reason why it's harmful. Only the verdict from our backend reputation systems is available to Freedome, the reasons for the verdict stay on the backend.
If you feel that a site has an incorrect verdict, please feel free to report it to us at: https://www.f-secure.com/en/web/labs_global/submit-a-sample#sample-url and put "Freedome related issue or problem" under URL TYPE. Also select the particular PROBLEM TYPE that suits your issue.

Not fully, not on its own. If you're accessing a TLS/SSL protected web search engine, or other web site, Freedome can not modify or decrypt traffic flowing between your web browser and the web site. So how does a middle aged dad, who knows nothing about vpn, go about setting up and using your service?
FreedomeVPN3 karma
You’ve made it to middle age with kids, so using VPN is going to be a cakewalk. Our design philosophy was to “make the easiest app in the world”. You literally install it, turn it on and press the big button in the middle to make it work. It automatically chooses a good location for you, but changing it is also two clicks away. We're pretty proud of our design and interface, even if we say so ourselves

Hi, thanks for a great product. I have 2 questions for you.
1) Are you planning to support Windows 10 mobile? If not, why?
2) I have trouble installing Freedome on my pc. Both the installer and the uninstaller hang when trying to install/uninstall the app. The problem started after I installed a beta version of Freedome on my Win 10 pc. Do you know what's up with it?
FreedomeVPN1 karma
1) We are investigating the support for Windows 10 mobile. Stay tuned.
2) We would be very interested in investigating what causes the installer/uninstaller to hang like that so that we’d be able to fix the problem. Please could you get in touch with us at [email protected] and include a short description of this problem in the message. Please also refer to this Reddit posting. We will contact you with further details.

I notice you send login information in clear text through e-mail after payment. Wouldn't be too easy for a government agency to simply link the payment information kept at one of your e-stores (say, Cleverbridge) with the activity of a particular Freedome user?
FreedomeVPN5 karma
The code that is sent is not actually a login password to the VPN service, it's more like a registration code or voucher that is sent to us once (strongly encrypted) when you enter it in the application, which then proves to us that a payment has been made. It's not transmitted later on, and a government agency can not link network activity to the payment information. We also have no logs of network activity flowing through Freedome that could be looked up later on.

We are painfully aware of the reinstallation issue and that has been recent priority. Reinstallations will be made easier real soon (January release).

I understand that there are some serious security concerns with PPTP. I have used OpenVPN and IPSEC/L2TP with great success, and I was wondering what protocol you prefer? Does either have a performance edge with modern hardware (esp. using the AES instruction set)?
FreedomeVPN2 karma
We are using the AES-NI instruction set, naturally, when available.
We get higher performance with IPSEC than with OpenVPN, probably mostly due to protocol efficiency and in-kernel implementation, instead of running the VPN daemon in user space. In OpenVPN, most of the overhead is now elsewhere than the actual crypto - HMAC, passing packets back and forth, etc. AES-GCM mode should help too, once we get there.
The choice over what to use boils more into what is available for which operating system / platform – properly configured OpenVPN and IPSEC are both secure enough, according to current knowledge.

Luckily we can add new VPN servers within a couple hours at many of our locations, so that we don't have to run to the hardware store and have someone fly to Australia. In this case we simply doubled the server capacity over there, to make it work better. Mostly it's just a matter of trying to figure out events like this before it slows down too much – give us a shout on Twitter if you see something big happening and we'll try to move fast.

Are there data caps on any of your services or do they just come with a plan for industrial use/vpn use?
How hard is it to get a server up in another region?
How expensive is it, server, data and toll included to get to another country?
Is it hard to upgrade a server capacity?
Would you ever consider a Icelandic Vpn server? I don't expect much
Is the pitza good :D?
Also, thoughts on the whole net neutrality, and the iss?
Have a nice Ama, and good luck

FreedomeVPN2 karma
First of, all, thanks a lot! (Twitter guy Tuomas is also answering your questions).
We have no data caps, no. We know that a lot of VPN’s do but we don’t. It might be a cultural thing, here in Finland internet connections have always been among the fastest and best in the world and the word “data cap” is something that most people think of as backward as "modem".
It’s quite a lot of work. Particularly in countries where our parent company doesn’t have an office, we have to do a lot of research to make sure the provider is reliable and trustworthy. In the past we have had to “take our business elsewhere” so to speak, because of frequent connection issues with certain providers.
I can’t give out exact sums (partly because it’s secret and partly because calculating it would depress everyone but the most enthusiastic accountant), but it’s very expensive.
It’s quite easy and can usually be done with a phone call. The trouble comes is that most providers allow us to upgrade for a month at a time, so getting more capacity because of one short-term spike in server activity is not something we usually do. We made an exception with the early Australian release of fallout 4. It was worth it to see how happy people were (the mention in Washington Post didn’t hurt either).
Unfortunately no plans for Iceland for the time being.
The pizza was just about the greatest pizza ever, shoutout to Alfons Pizza in Helsinki. If you haven’t tried Pizza with pear, blue cheese and walnuts, you haven’t lived
The importance of net neutrality ties with the equality that internet offers in the first place. The greatest thing about the intermet is that everyone has access to all the information, and the whole compendium of human knowledge is at anyone's disposal. The internet as an open and free space is the greatest enabler of potential and the greatest weapon for the voiceless.
burk-reddit1 karma
Aha, thanks for all the answers.
One more thing, are there any plans for New Zealand servers, it would give you more customers that use the service for gaming, as for example fallout 4 was released the earliest in New Zealand

Why do you only support IPSEC? It is blocked in a few networks I am on regularly. SSL VPN seems to be blocked a lot less
FreedomeVPN2 karma
Our server software package only does OpenVPN and IPSEC currently, mostly because they work quite well, they're secure, and those protocols are widely available on the client platforms, and for our servers. IPSEC is used for iOS, and OpenVPN for the other platforms.
Unfortunately iOS only does IPSEC and PPTP natively.

Why is it at my school, no apps seek to work. We are connected to a school server and the websites are blocked by light speed systems. Will your app work?
FreedomeVPN2 karma
Some school networks apparently have quite heavy filters, depending on the local laws, regulations, and what the local administration happens to think about the Internet and its contents. The app may or may not work – it is possible to block Freedome, too. Give it a go, there's a 14-day free trial.
FreedomeVPN1 karma
We've talked about it a bit, but no immediate plans. It'd certainly provide a very anonymous method for purchasing, which would suit the product well. On the other hand, probably fairly small number of customers would actually use it to purchase. We are also working in a corporation whose accounting/finance department might get slightly confused if we started passing them bitcoins! If there would be a nice, stable and secure software package to easily set up a key code shop with Bitcoin payment, so that we wouldn't have to spend a lot of time to set it up, we could maybe try it out. Pointers are welcome. No promises.
FreedomeVPN3 karma
We do have some level of IPv6 support - Freedome provides IPv6 Internet access to Android, Windows and OS X clients (i.e. IPv6 within VPN). We've done that from almost the beginning, primarily because we don't want to let IPv6 traffic bypass the VPN! On iOS, local IPv6 access gets disabled while the VPN is connected, so that bypass doesn't happen. We should look into providing IPv6 to iOS IPSEC clients pretty soon, too. Basically, we have IPv6 connectivity from all of our data centers already, that's a hard requirement for us.
We also tested providing VPN over IPv6, but unfortunately the OpenVPN client currently does not behave nicely with it – it would try to connect IPv6 first, and if it didn't work (no IPv6 available locally), it would only fall back to IPv4 after a rather lengthy timeout. Not fun for the majority of users who don't yet have IPv6. That's getting fixed already, after that we can try it again, probably during spring 2016.
Some mobile networks actually provide only IPv6 to handsets, with 6to4 providing access to IPv4 servers. It seems like Freedome works fine on those networks most of the time (Freedome client thinks it is talking to an IPv6 server!), although there was at least one example when it didn't, possibly due to a broken or limited-functionality 6to4 setup.

We're not ornithologists, but we think it's faster than your standard CPython. However, to get a proper answer we would first need to know whether it is an African or a European swallow.
Regarding Mr. Robot, we love anything that reminds people that you should protect your privacy, because you are probably being tracked right now and somebody's using that data, possibly including, but not limited to Christian Slater.
