We're Vincent D'Onofrio and Charlie Cox from DAREDEVIL. AUA.
Hello reddit.
I am Vincent D'Onofrio. I play Wilson Fisk in Marvel's Daredevil.
I will be joined for this AMA today by Charlie Cox. He plays the Man Without Fear, Matt Murdock, in Daredevil.
Marvel's Daredevil starts streaming on Netflix this Friday April 10. It's the first Netflix Original streaming in all our regions.
Trailer here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jAy6NJ_D5vU&feature=youtu.be
Victoria helped us get started.
Go ahead... AUA.
EDIT: Right guys, Charlie's putting his pants back on now. Thank you so much for your questions! Charlie and I are signing off! See you on the 10th!

It's all so mind blowing to me that we'll be having Daredevil in just a few days with you guys leading the show! Your castings have got to be one of the most inspired the MCU has seen. There's no doubt that you guys will be kickass.
To both: You've probably read a good chunk of DD and Fisk stories by now so I gotta ask if you guys have any particular favorites? Other than Man Without Fear of course.
To Charlie: The Owl seems to be watered down into a more realistic character in the show and he sort of came from a time where DD's villains where campy and over the top. Are there any campy DD villains that you'd like to go up against one day? Maybe Stilt-Man? Or Matador?
To Vincent: You made my entire month by retweeting a Daredevil article I wrote a while back. Thank you so much for that. Full Metal Jacket is one of my all time favorite films and your Kubrick-stare to me is the most terrifying Kubrick-stare of them all. What was it like working with Stanley Kubrick?
Thank you so much guys for the amazing that you're doing. I cannot wait for Friday to come by!
VincentDOnofrio179 karma
He was amazing. He was an incredible photographer and cinematic storyteller. It was my first film, so it was like going to film school. I'm here talking to you now because of Stanley Kubrick.

The tabloids are saying the Matt Murdock is Daredevil. Is this true?
VincentDOnofrio192 karma
I think that one of the great changes that Charlie made as an actor was to not divide the two-- Matt Murdock and Daredevil. They are one. I believe that was Charlie's choice, and an actor, and that was very smart. That unlike other superheroes, there's really no change when the vigilante outfit is on. He is Matt Murdock and Daredevil all the time.

Hey guys! Lifelong Daredevil fan here; so stoked to see what’s sounding like a pitch-perfect realization of one of my favorite heroes!
Couple questions:
What’s the toughest part of your respective characters to nail down?
What kinda research did ya’ll do beforehand? The Miller run’s influence is pretty evident, but did anything from the Smith, Bendis, or Waid runs seep in?
Can’t wait til next Friday! Thanks so much for doing this!
VincentDOnofrio127 karma
I read everything I could find on Fisk. You know, every comic that had chapters on him.
Guardian_Ainsel52 karma
As a follow-up question, did you find a lot of differences between the ways that different writers portrayed Fisk?
VincentDOnofrio132 karma
Big difference. From the beginning of Fisk in Spiderman, all the way through to the most recent series with Daredevil, he's become a much more multi-leveled character. And each series, including The Punisher, brought changes and expansion to his character.
VincentDOnofrio232 karma
Civil War. I'd like to not just be in one, but the whole series. Also, since Spidey is back at Marvel, there was no other badder nemesis in Spidey than Wilson.

What are your pet peeves, guys? Especially on set, if any? Thanks for doing this AMA!

What's an aspect of Daredevil that you think makes the show stand out among every other superhero film/TV show today?
VincentDOnofrio153 karma
Geez. I think because it's under the umbrella of Netflix, we have an opportunity to do things that other Marvel shows aren't doing. We can be, for lack of a better term, down and dirty, just simply because of our platform. And there's been a lot of care taken in this Daredevil series. Everybody wanted to knock it out of the park for the fans. I was lucky to be included in that group. I think that kind of positive influence helps it to stand out as well. I think if it is the great show I think it is, it's because of those reasons.

For Vincent:
What kind of man would you desrcibe Wilson Fisk in with just 3 words?
bilbohaggins70 karma
Mr. Cox, are you in fact wearing pants in your confirmation picture here?
VincentDOnofrio122 karma
No, he has no pants on. We've tried to convince him to put some on, but he refuses. (Of course I'm lying.) But Charlie has no pants on.

If Matt Murdock and Wilson Fisk were forced to perform a karaoke duet together, which song would they pick?
pic216458 karma
This question is both for Mr. Cox and Mr. D'Onofrio, which actors or actresses from the Marvel Cinematic Universe would you like to work with on a Marvel property in the future?
VincentDOnofrio116 karma
So far, all of them. I think that what Marvel is doing is amazing. I do have a soft spot in my heart for Iron Man. I know Fisk made a deal with him during Civil War, I'd love to see that happen. But one can only hope.
buhlakay52 karma
Thank you both so much for doing this AMA! I'm a big fan of both you, I can't wait to see what's in store for Daredevil.
Charlie: You were actually my dream casting for Matt Murdock when I first saw Stardust however long ago, I can't wait to see what you bring to the character!
The trailers make the action seem very visceral and brutal, how labor intensive was working on Daredevil? Did you get to really delve into the action of the show?
Was it easy to tap into the "Catholic Guilt" that is so prominent in Matt Murdock's character?
Who was the most fun person on set to work with?
Vincent: Vincent, you're easily one of my favorite actors to this day, you bring a sense of gravitas and presence in every role I've seen you in so when I heard you would be playing Wilson Fisk, I knew immediately that Daredevil would be a must-watch.
Kingpin is a powerful and prominent character, what inspirations did you draw from to craft your characterization of him?
Did you ever expect to play such an important role in a Marvel property?
What was your reaction to the script when you first read it? Were you excited, intimidated, aroused?
For both of you: If you could describe Daredevil in 3 words, what would you say?
Bonus question: who would win in a straight fist-fight, Vincent, Charlie or Rosario Dawson?
VincentDOnofrio66 karma
It was mostly Mack's art and Stankovic, their art inspired me the most.
No. I'm extremely happy that it happened, it's been a lot of fun so far.
I knew that it was a new approach to putting a film project out there, that is was going to be very much unlike the films. It was going to be much more realistic and down and dirty.
VincentDOnofrio85 karma
Well, for comics, these days it's Daredevil. When I was a kid it was Spiderman and Captain America.
There's so many books. Every good book I read is an inspiration. Right now I'm reading "The Long Home" by William Gay. It's dark but the writing is inspirational.
Guardian_Ainsel47 karma
Have you read the The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier and Clay? You might enjoy it after reading so many comics lately!
concretin46 karma
Mr. D'Onofrio, what do you think has been the most intimidating role of your career and why?
VincentDOnofrio79 karma
I think when I was younger roles were intimidating. Now I just see each one as an adventure. I guess when I was young, the role in Full Metal jacket, because it was my first film. These days, I only hope to get complicated and difficult roles to play. Because as I said, that's where the adventure lies for me.
VincentDOnofrio99 karma
At 12:01 on the 10th of April there's a good chance I'll be sleeping. I'm shooting a film in Atlanta right now and we're working long days in the hot fields of Goergia. So hopefully I'll be passed out like a dog.
JMNetwork40 karma
Charlie, I saw in an interview somewhere that you've started reading comics! That's awesome! What daredevil comics did you read going into this and which ones stand out to you?
Vincent, what research if any went into being Wilson Fisk and how do you compare your version to Michael Clark Duncan's?
VincentDOnofrio74 karma
I never saw Michael Clark Duncan's Fisk. But Michael is a very good actor and I'm sure it was great.
rhodetolove33 karma
Have you guys been given any info on the future of the show or the other Marvel Netflix shows?
VincentDOnofrio53 karma
No. We know as much as you guys know, for other Marvel Netflix shows.
VincentDOnofrio117 karma
Given? No. We had to go out an buy it ourselves! (Charlie gave me a Daredevil graphic novel that I pretended I didn't have already.)
VincentDOnofrio64 karma
I think it was finding how to portray Fisk in an emotional way, as well as a menacing way. It was important to me to take Steven DeKnight's words off the page and perform them to include the humanity that he wrote them with. That was the biggest challenge throughout, to keep it sprinkled with the Marvel universe with a superhero feel, and at the same time ground it with emotional truth.
Velorium_Camper29 karma
What were your reactions when you found out you'd be playing Wilson Fisk and Daredevil?
VincentDOnofrio52 karma
I loved the character, I knew him from the comic books when I was kid. What really inspired me was the way Steven DeKnight wrote him. I looked forward to reading every script, because I knew the writing was going to be so good.
rhodetolove24 karma
Vincent, Kingpin plays as a large villain for more heroes than just Daredevil, was it a lot of pressure playing a big villain?
VincentDOnofrio45 karma
The expectations from the fans built an enthusiasm in me. It's something that has always made me rise to the occasion. People's expectations inspired me; made me want to meet them.
bilbohaggins22 karma
Mr. D'Onofrio, who is more powerful: Frank Underwood or Wilson Fisk? Discuss!
VincentDOnofrio69 karma
I don't know, but we'll find out when Wilson Fisk runs for President.

Hi!
So I've heard a lot about Daredevil, and I want to know, why should I watch it, apart from you two starring in it? Why would you recommend it? Thanks.
VincentDOnofrio46 karma
I would recommend it because it's a new way of doing a superhero show. It's something unlike what you've seen before. Because of Steven DeKnight's writing and, as I said, the platform under this umbrella of Netflix. Netflix allowed us the time and gave us the care to get it right, so you'll have 13 hours of storytelling. That's something, when it comes to superheroes, you've never experienced before. And I believe that we took the time they gave us and we were inspired by the material. And in my opinion, knocked it out of the park.

Mr Cox how was work with Vincent ? Mr.D'Onofrio how was work with Charlie ?

Other than the smell, it was great! But the smell, well... never mind.

For Vincent: Do you think Edgar Bug would have stand a chance against Kingpin?
For Charlie: How much Daredevil comics did you have to read in order to prepare? And did you happen to watch the 2003 director cut of the film as well?
VincentDOnofrio19 karma
It would be interesting to see what Fisk would be like if Edgar took over Fisk's body. I think there would be a conflict of interest. I think in the end Fisk is much more intelligent than Edgar, so he might win the battle. If Edgar Bug ever recovers from his stomach being blown to pieces.
VincentDOnofrio29 karma
I've been to Italy, but I love it passionately and there are small towns in Italy that I think are just amazing. So I would love to spend more time there.
VincentDOnofrio44 karma
Yes. And my children hate it. And I'm brilliant at it. Thank you, it feels so good to be back.
VincentDOnofrio32 karma
There's a lot. I think that the end of the 2nd episode with Charlie is amazing. I just saw it the other day and I was blown away by it. After that, I think there are scenes with Fisk and Vanessa (who's played by Ayelet Zurer) that came out great. And what happens in those scenes I don't think anyone would expect from a superhero series.
VincentDOnofrio42 karma
I know this is embarrassing for me, but I've never seen Breaking Bad. All I heard, without sounding too lame, was that it was one of the best things ever on television. I can only hope that Daredevil will get the same reputation. I think that Daredevil is breaking all kinds of ground.

Hi, I have a question for Vincent, would you rather fight one horse sized duck? Or 100 duck sized horses?

One last question for the both of you :
What is the pizza of your dreams ?
VincentDOnofrio33 karma
The pizza of my dreams is made in the train station at Napoli. They have the best pizza in the world.

Hi Vincent and Charlie Who is the most like/least like their character? Do you both do any of your own stunts?
Thanks for taking the time to do this x
VincentDOnofrio19 karma
I think we both have a bit of our characters in us, especially since we're the actors portraying them. But I've seen Charlie jump around on set and he definitely has Daredevil in him.
I did most of my own stunts.
erikalovestodd5 karma
Charlie who is your idol ? your inspiration ?
what about you Vincent ?
trekstark215 karma
Hi! Mr. Cox, did you prefer using the red Daredevil suit or the black one we have seem in the trailers? Also, who would win in a fight, Batman or Daredevil?
And Mr. D'Onofrio, would you willing to be a villain in the upcoming Spider-Man film?
Thanks!
