I am Angwe, the Ganker God of World of Warcraft, AMA
I got a few requests to do an AMA in this post, along with a formal request here.
So in very early World of Warcraft I played a Orc Rogue named Angwe who became relatively well known for all but closing down a major port deep in enemy territory (Menethil Harbor) for months on end and maintaining a website of rage fueled tells and empty threats.
When I left for college I quit WoW and eventually quit hosting my website. Various people saved the screenshots and kept the site going until eventually Luke McKinney found it and put it as the #1 Most Elaborate Dick Moves in Online Gaming History
So here I am, hopefully in the right subreddit to answer your questions.
Proof:
Screenshot of an email from Blizzard in 2005 verifying my characters name and server.

Not really, being able to see the other teams chat really made things interesting.

Hey I was essentially your spiritual counterpart on the Gorgonnash server. Didn't you ever have to deal with alliance guilds who started to get dedicated to hunting you? After a few hours of this about 10 or 15 would show up, so I always swapped spots.

You could do a few things. You could pick the weakest of the group and try to kill and bail, or you could go chain kill some lowbies in the wetlands itself, get them to scream a bit and usually it would at least break the group up as some or all of them would come looking. You can also get on the boat and not start stabbing until the boat leaves the dock...but you would have to make sure to jump off before zoning.

Before you kill yourself could you transcribe your last words and send them to me?

I run liquidcode.org. Would you like me to take your content down?
I put it up because I thought it was hilarious and mirrored it for my own lulz. Then all the other mirrors went down. I kept it up. When Cracked originally put that article up it brought my little VPS to it's knees and used most my allotted bandwidth for the month. I tossed google ads up there to help pay for my bandwidth overages.
EDIT: Here is what happened when cracked first posted that article. http://imgur.com/fILyQ
EDIT2: It's happening again! http://imgur.com/zQ0De
Updated MaxClients in apache from 150 to 256. This should resolve some of the slowness issues.

I don't have a problem with you hosting it, but if you intend to take it down let me know so I can make other arrangements.

I never played WoW, but why didn't people just team up to kill you when they wanted to pass?
Angwe774 karma
I was pretty good with a Rogue, which were already pretty powerful on their own. People would team up but I can stealth and wait for a person to break away from the group or just get in and kill one and get out.
Reasonable_enough70 karma
I never played WoW but wasn't there any items or spells that let players see invisible or hidden players?
Angwe202 karma
If you got close enough to the rogue they would destealth, but the radius was so low that by the time you could see them it was usually too late.
Hunters also had an area of effect ability called flare which would remove stealth.
Thud_Gunderson374 karma
Was it just you alone doing it? If so, how did you manage to keep such a complete hold on the area - or are the stories of that overblown? The stuff I read suggests that you essentially covered the area night and day for weeks.
Angwe717 karma
It was just me, typically 8-10 hours a day. I didn't raid, level alts and only rarely did dungeons after 60. My goal was to get on average 100 honor kills in a day (this was before battlegrounds), which would put me either 1st or 2nd place weekly in the honor grind.
I would have friends come on other characters every once in a while, but usually that would just be counter productive. The idea was to get lowbies to scream loud enough that a few white knights would come try and save them or go level up and come back for revenge themselves...not to start a riot.
asdf92392 karma
Should note that back at this time, wetlands had only one graveyard that was quite a walk to town. This made it a great place for this sort of pvp because it wasn't just a gy zerg fest. You could have a good amount of downtime between kills to regen CDs and let the heat die down
Angwe187 karma
Actually, there were 2 graveyards. Alliance spawned very close to the city while horde spawned at the far one you mentioned. I did that walk so many times. so many times.
biggerx32 karma
So people did kill you at certain points? Did you just walk back to town and start stabbing them in the back again like it never happened? Or did you save a special type of revenge for the people that actually took you down?

What was your most memorable fight/gank that you had during your time camping near Menethil?
Angwe728 karma
One of the first things I did when I got Angwespy was bullshit my way into a few big alliance guilds, get an office tag (all as a lvl 1) and use macros to remove everyone in the guild almost instantly. The reactions were spectacular…ganking lets you drink sweet tears, but wiping out an established guild lets you main line them.
Other than that the guide on how to get around me was amazing. I had heard rumors about it but I had to get access to the guild forums to see it myself.

How do you feel about being having the number one dick move? Did it start as a joke and just got out of hand? What was your daily routine to protect the area? are you a dick in real life? I must say I have never played WoW, but find it very cool what you did.
Angwe388 karma
I think the whole dick move thing is funny and flattering. I have friends who didn't play WoW or were really into gaming at all, and the story that he wrote made it easy for them to understand the whole thing.
It got out of hand a few times. I felt bad about this one and I could have gotten banned for this guy over here

Originally I missed being able to communicate with the people I am fighting. I came from Everquest PvP (played with Pandemonium on Tallon Zek) so I was familiar with people getting really pissed when they lose, especially if they feel it was unfair. The problem was that I had to play two characters in order to see what people were saying, so it was better to stay in one place that I was sure to see a lot of traffic.
I actually started in Aberdine at about lvl 45, this was before they had the boats working. Blizzard had these NPCs setup which would teleport people between Menethil and Aberdine. It was extremely cheap because the players body would load in before they had control, so I could go to town on people. The problem with Aberdine was that the only route I had for escape was jumping off the docks, which took like 10 minutes to get back into position. So when Blizzard fixed the boats I found myself getting overwhelmed quite often by entire boatloads of people instead of the steady trickle that I was used to. Menethil worked out really well because it had enough higher levels that I could compete in the (then) upcoming honor system, but also swarms of lower levels that I could satiate my thirst for sweet succulent rage tells and use as a sort of white knight bait to draw out the higher level players.

What was your character name on PDM in TZ? I don't remember an Angwe. I played with them for a bit, then quit, then played again when they started another guild on an emu server that was just mainland EQ although they were working on RoK it never really came together.
Angwe68 karma
I went by Angwe in Pandemonium, was a Troll Beastlord and quit after PoK.
I was actually a developer on the VZ / TZ Emulator after Daxum left, I went by Null. We got Kunark complete but I think the actual guild Pandemonium had dissolved (the one on the emulator not the live server).
Project 1999 has a PvP server going right now. I am on the staff and helped out a lot in the beginning, but not as of late.

Wait, so are you the guy that the World of Warcraft south park episode was about?
Angwe177 karma
Hell if I know.
The guards that spawn on the docks did get progressively more powerful as time went on, but I fairly certain that had more to do with the bottleneck then me personally.

How did you feel about WoW's transition away from the more conventional means of travel towards porting everywhere / flying?
Angwe256 karma
The teleporting I don't mind so much, but the pvp free zones and having no real way to dismount people from flying mounts kills world pvp.

I often refer to yout site when people put on the nostalgia goggles and start claiming that Vanilla was the greatest thing ever. Thanks for keeping your site up so long.
Between your website and World of Roguecraft, I ended up leveling a rogue in Vanilla despite my distaste of the class back then. Then I discovered how fun it was terrorizing farming zones.

What are you studying in school and where do you see gaming ten years from now?
Angwe143 karma
I got a degree in Game Art and Design, which is a really expensive way to say BFA. I sort of did some creative electives and ended up getting some good programming chops. So I have been working in the games industry for 3 years now as a programmer.

How do you feel about the current state of the game vs how it used to be back in vanilla and in BC?
My opinion is that BC was the best time in WOW and it has gone down hill A LOT
Angwe132 karma
I have not looked too much into MoP, but with each expansion there seems to be less importance on player reputation and more on just collecting things with faceless people.
BC was nice but flying mounts killed world PvP (and again in Cata) and Arenas were too sterile and repetitive for me.

Bhalls was a very good Rogue that if I had issues with when we would fight (we were pals though so that rarely happened).
Warriors were a problem once Arcinite Reapers starting becoming common, but I cannot think of any that were absolutely unkillable.
I was also lucky to be horde and not have to deal with prenerf windfury nonsense.

Did anyone ever get the best of you and kill you multiple times and did you ever rage hard enough that you had to quit for the day?
Angwe58 karma
I had my fair share of getting pissed off, but I got over it fairly quickly. Honestly I got mad at horde more often than alliance. After a certain point people would come and try to 'help me'.
