I would ask for extra work. I would do really gross maintenance work (the kind the managers normally left as punishment for employees who showed up late). I would beg people to trade shifts with me. But I still only rarely got close to 30 hours.

One of my coworkers (who started out at the original Austin location and had worked for the Drafthouse for 8+ years) suddenly stopped receiving health benefits because he was only averaging 29.something hours per week (which management saw and didn't alert him).

Maybe this wasn't a fair question. But it was the question I wanted answered. I love the Alamo Drafthouse as a movie theater. I would absolutely recommend it as a place to watch movies. But I wouldn't recommend it as a place to work (for other reasons, such as a lack of job security, shitty management, etc) and I think that shows that something is broken in the system. And I was working at what is considered one of the "best" Drafthouses.

I just read This Is How You Lose Her and I loved it. You write such beautiful and realistic dialogue. Do you have a process for writing such natural exchanges? Or do you just have an ear for language? Do you have any tips on how to write dialogue?
