Former CO. My goal was to treat every inmate I interacted with like a person. I would talk with them, tell them how they can get themselves out of jail, listen to them vent and overall just not be a power-hungry asshole. The only issues I ever had were either with mentally unstable people and teens, but generally the later would realize I would help them out if I could and would straighten the fuck up.
The most interesting interaction I ever had was with someone who had been in my jail 33 times in one year alone. He was a total asshole to anyone, would love to start fights and wanted to hurt people. All I did was ask him how he was doing, and he realized I was being genuine and he chilled out. We talked for about 30 minutes and I never had any issues with him again.
Most of the time, you're dealing with people on the worst day of their life so far. If you want to thrive at that job, you have to remember they are people. You've been in situations where if it went to shit, you would be sitting were they are as well.

A very good friend of mine is a cop in Texas. As long as you don't shoot them in the back or pursue them off of your property, you'll pretty much just have to turn the gun in and give a statement.
You're still liable for a civil suit that, but good luck with that in Texas.

If he were in Texas, he would have been gold. I love living in a state where I have the right to defend myself.
