Also the level of detail people are fretting about in the comments in this thread aren't going to happen with a smallish company's satellites these days. Your maximum resolving power is a function of the wavelength you're viewing and your camera's physical size. That's a hard, absolute, basic-laws-of-physics limit. It can't be coded, engineered or throw-more-moneyed around.

If a hypothetical SpyOnYouCorp wants to know what book you're reading or whatever other scifi level of detail, they've got two and only two options. One is they can get closer; that isn't possible in the case of these satellites, since if they get any lower they'll reenter. The other option would be to make enormous, swallow-Hubble-whole imaging satellites, and putting a fleet of those in orbit will present its own set of problems.

He's using the term because anyone who uses the term "virtue signalling" with a straight face defines it as "doing anything other people approve of which I don't like."

Re: the downvotes - threads in this sub discussing climate change tend to either get brigaded or glommed onto by deniers.

Some really sad individual went to the trouble in the last hour or so of downvoting every top-level question in the thread that was written on the assumption that anthropogenic climate change is a real thing that exists.
