My name is Joseph wood. /u/jwood1289 After serving 3 and half years in prison and numerous times in jail I made a vow to make a change and do something meaningful with my life. For the past year and a half I have been running an online site that sells wooden sunglasses and watches called Native Shades. About a year into it I started seeking out craftsmen and started drawing out designs and now I brought the first designs unique to the brand to kickstarter. With the new products I not only hope to provide people with beautiful hand crafted products, I also hope to pass on what I have learned from my experiences both good and bad. When locked up I got heavily into reading as many prisoners do however alot of the books I picked up are some I never have before. I began to question a lot about life and death especially since I lost my mother shortly before my prison sentence. I honestly just started nativeshades as a side hustle to make some extra money because my choices of jobs were limited and I knew I had to think outside the box. After starting the business however I saw I could pass on a lot of what I learned while in prison with these products. I read a lot on chinese medicine as well as native american healing techniques. I got real into health and realized I needed to take care of myself while I was in there because I honestly didnt know when and if I was going to make it out and at what age. Now that I am out hopefully I can do better for my mother and family and make a difference in other peoples lives that have found themselves in similar situations. I realize a lot of felons and people facing struggles in life can feel stuck and I just want to show you dont have to let that hold you back and you can over come it.
