I liked the gif in the article you linked that showed the original, lightroom, and photoshop version of the image. The original was rather dark, and I was surprised at the amount of detail you were able to pull out of the shadows. Awesome work!

I noticed you shot that with Sony gear. What attracted you to Sony over Nikon or Canon?

It's likely A/B testing being used to find which title gets the higher click-through rate.

A lot of websites use this technique to maximize their article's views. Things like changing the titles and thumbnails and showing different visitors a different set and then ultimately choosing to show everyone the most successful title/thumbnail combination are easy techniques to implement.
