ARE YOU FUCKING SORRY?

This happened to me just last night and very frequently. I have a bad habit of watching/listening to science videos on youtube to help distract my brain from life and also wear it down with thinking. I figure, either I am engaged learning something new or worn down enough to drift off into sleep. It usually works within the 30 minute video, and then my phone turns off a couple minutes after the video ends. However, when I wake up in the middle of the night, I immediately grab my phone and find about halfway in the video about where I fell asleep and start replaying it again. Only half the time am I able to drift back into sleep before the end of the video; the other half is like last night and the example in your question.

On other nights I have actually experimented with keeping my phone far away from me. I basically practice meditating myself to sleep. The way I figure, either I get valuable meditation time facing my own thoughts/fears/insecurities to make me an emotionally stronger person or I relax myself back into sleep. In those instances, when I have awoken in the middle of the night, grabbing my phone is not even an option. I do the meditation thing again, and it usually works pretty quickly.

Why don't I meditate every night instead of playing on my phone? Because it's very uncomfortable facing my own thoughts. Not that they're scary thoughts, but hey most of us have plenty of worries and insecurities that are not enjoyable to face. The thing about meditation is that the focus is not about resolving any of those issues; it's merely about facing and observing them. After last night's severe difficulty with sleeping, I vow to go back to my meditation practice tonight.

UPDATE: So I went to sleep last night without my phone and letting myself go into a meditative state. I honestly can't remember being awake for more than 60 seconds. And I did wake up once or twice in the middle of the night. At one point I wanted to grab my phone but refrained. Ended up falling back to sleep without too much trouble. Looking forward to continuing this experiment. My concern is when a lady friend visits and if she snores or breathes loudly. I get distracted easily. I almost never get quality sleep when the girl stays the night. Guess I'll worry about that another time.
