An operating system comes hard coded into your processor which you have no control over, but it has absolute access to your hardware PLUS networking. If a hacker could exploit this operating system (possibly remotely due to it having network capabilities), they would have access to do whatever they want with your computer.

In addition, even when your computer is powered down but plugged in, it's still running in the background.
