FMJ = Full Metal Jacket, means what it says, the bullet has a copper or some other metal jacket with usually lead on the inside. Home defense ammo is usually some kind of hollow point round which expands on impact to cause maximum tissue damage. It also has the benefit of not overpenetrating, since depending on the cartridge, FMJ may go through your target, increasing the chances of a stray bullet hitting things it isn't supposed to. Since the hollow point round is designed to transfer maximum energy to target, it won't go flying off afterwards. One downside to this is that hollow points are absolutely terrible against bullet resistant vests since they just mushroom out and don't go through.
