While totally shitty, that is unfortunately how it's done. Most likely your management didn't know either. Possibly the GM, and maybe the AGM, but that would be about it.

Otherwise, product would go missing, people would stop showing up for work, damage to the building, etc etc.

I worked for a restaurant in a mall once. Another restaurant closed, but they made the mistake of pissing off the GM, AGM, and other managers. They just opened the doors wide, had no corporate people or security there, and it was a free for all.

The GM, AGM and managers just left the doors open. Silverware, new TVs, computers, equipment, all taken. stripped pretty bare by mid afternoon.
