I finished a 2500 mile (4100km) walk a few months ago. The stray dogs in Romania were by far the biggest bloody nuisance of the whole thing. Especially since I had a dog I'd picked up along the way with me.

Our closest call was just before we crossed the border into Bulgaria when around 15 of them came at us on a deserted street. My stick I use to keep them back was useless because my dog had chewed it up and I thought it was all over for us, or definitely him.

Then this taxi came around the corner and the driver was a woman who must have been in her late sixties leapt out wielding a bannister. She carved into those dogs like she was in the front line of a medieval battle and they all bailed yelping for their lives.

Then a man with a shovel came and escorted us out of the pack's domain. Romania was my favourite country to walk through in terms of landscape and immense kindness from strangers... but the stray dogs were the bane of me and my dog's time there.

Thank you for answering. Just looked you up and realised that my question was a little foolish. I lived under a rock.
