He answered here.
tl;dr: he did it piece by piece with what he could afford each time, so doesn't have a hard number but would estimate 20k.

One time I "came to" while under anesthesia for a colonoscopy, which was a very strange and a bit unnerving experience. I distinctly remember suddenly being able to see, hear, and feel everything that was going on around me - and in me. But obviously was extremely disoriented and in a lot of discomfort due to a camera being a meter deep in my ass. I immediately began trying to speak to inform the doctors/nurses I was awake and to put me back under, though I'm sure my speech was a bit incomprehensible. I remember the doctors/nurses being pretty nonplussed about it, though the situation felt pretty terrible for me.
I guess a few questions based on this experience I had: 1) do some anesthetics not completely "knock out" the person? As in, the patient is awake and responsive throughout the procedure but just subdued and in twilight enough not be aware/remembering it? 2) are there different anesthetics used for procedures where it's generally "okay" if a person wakes up momentarily like a colonoscopy or root canal rather than say intensive surgery? 3) what is the immediate response on your end when a person does wake up? Is it just to adjust the dosage until they go back under? Do you try to interact with or calm the patient, or is that a bit pointless in their state?

Have you had the chance to meet with Capt. Sullenberger after the event? If so, what did you say to him?
