TIS-100 sort of gave me hope about the niche part, but I can totally see content creation being the problem. After you have made the game, you still need to go out and design a coffee machine, a radio, a bomb detonator control thingy, a mobile phone, etc. etc. You could use modular units, but then the puzzles would get pretty samey and boring.

Unfortunately my budget does not yet stretch quite that far, but if I win the lottery I'll keep it in mind.
