I'm a European citizen. It costs my company about 10 to 15k to enter the lottery. My odds are about 30% each time. I have a US Master's degree and I genuinely enjoy living here and my tech company pays me well above average wage. Despite having a bit of an accent, I speak and write as fluently as in my native language.
If I don't "make" the lottery within 3 years my current visa expired and I can just bury all my hopes and dreams of staying here in Silicon Valley for a while and contributing to technology, despite having been here for 6 years by then. Paying tons of taxes etc.
Not all H1-B workers are the same.
Luckily I've "accepted" my impending fate and am trying not to get too overly attached to the US. I also have a eu passport so it's not like I'll be that much worse of. But I do genuinely like living here and contributing and it sucks.
