I’ve read American Nations and I’m a white Southerner but my family are from Appalachia. I like Woodward’s book but he is not free from bias, he comes out of the collectivism of Yankeedom and it does colour his viewpoint. He may agree on that.
I latch onto Appalachia a bit more than the low country. My ancestry was from Scotland and Ulster. Most of them didn’t have slaves. Acing said that many of my ancestors fought for the confederacy. I believe this was because they did not want an army poking its nose into their little insular communities. Plus they loved to fight. It’s almost a hyper individualist society.

People who don't live in Kentucky should stay out of Kentucky elections including as donors. Big corporate or private citizens.

I'll chime in here and state I was an extra on the 3rd episode of the 3rd season. I've never done it before (not sure that I'd do it again), but the Treme actors and set crew were beyond professional and very accommodating. Plus shooting at 3 bars to listen to Tab Benoit play all day isn't too shabby of a way to spend a day.
