If you like historical fiction, an interesting take on this theme is The Night Watch by Sarah Waters. Set in London in 1947, 44, and 41 (yes, in that order!)

Saw Colbert do part of a commencement at Knox College in 2006 as himself. Basically, the man is very humble, smart, and empathetic.
