My thoughts have always been that people change so much when going through life and to convict someone to a life behind bars for anything they did when they were a young person is crazy. So let's say your 17 something gets heated and someone gets killed but you didn't plan it should you spend 2 decades in jail? Hell no. I'm 28 and I'm like a different person compared to when I was 20 my whole thought process is different and it will be that much more different another 10 years from now. I think the problem with the jail system is they forget what the word " rehabilitation" means, it does not mean lock me up my whole life till I'm a fucking nut case and then release me without a job and hope I don't commit a crime to survive.
