One thing you should not underestimate is the importance of peers to discuss your ideas with. I'm pretty sure that this is the biggest hurdle to independent research.

Of course, the internet has also made it easier to assemble like-minded individuals who enjoy deep technical conversations on subjects that hold your interest - but it still requires work on your part (joining the appropriate online communities, making it easy for people to give feedback on your work, etc).
