This is simply not true. Kava root is not dangerous to the liver in anyway. That myth has long been debunked. The aerial parts of the plant are not fit for consumption due to their low levels of kavalactons and high levels of the undesirable flavokavains. The only studies and reports about liver toxicity are from crude alcohol based extracts which also extract high levels of flavokavains.

Traditionally prepared root poses no danger to the liver even when consumed on a daily basis. This has been confirmed by Dr. Vincent Lebot, Dr. Mathias Schmidt, et al and is backed up by the fact that despite daily consumption in places like Tonga and Fiji there is no spike in liver damage. These people have been consuming kava daily for centuries with no ill effects.

It is important that you use noble cultivars but that doesn't have anything to do with liver toxicity. Its because tudei kava has undesirable effects due to their chemotype.

You should never purchase kava from a health food store or supermarket unless you happen to live in Hawaii or have a Melanesian store need you that sells bulk kava.

Kava is also not illegal and Canada and has not been linked to any deaths.

Since we are throwing around credentials and calling them "sources" I have a degree in Chemistry and Biology, am current in Medical School, and a long time kava drinker.
