It's the same everywhere - if you plead guilty you get less time than if you make the state go through the expense of a trial before finding you guilty. Because otherwise nobody would ever plead guilty and your courts would be blocked.

You really aren't covering yourself with glory here. It's entirely self inflicted. Perhaps your time in the forces taught you that Americans don't have to follow foreigners rules...
