I think a bigger issue than investment banks is the central bank, aka the Fed. The low interest rate or even zero interest rate policies have created a reliance on cheap money to create artificial growth, which ends up with bubbles and popping of bubbles like in 2008. This allows so called zombie companies who should be failing and gone from the market, to continue to survive even though they are not profitable, they just keep borrowing cheap money. Companies should be allowed to fail, this was the great moral hazard created during the last recession, now banks look at the risk of going out of business as almost zero, so why not take huge risks? If you win you get a lot of money, if you lose, you get bailed out. This is also why we are seeing dumb companies IPO that are losing money.
