I asked mostly because my first semester of college (last fall) I read a book by Vine Deloria, Jr., a section of which ranted on how horrible Anthropologists (specifically Cultural) were and basically called us out as parasites. You pretty much answered my question with saying we're important.
Oddly enough, that book was what got me into anthropology.
