I do a lot of multi-week motorcycle camping trips in the more remote areas of the western states. I carry a lot of the typical expensive outdoorsy gadgets that you'll find most yuppies have (InReach, jetboil stove, kurydan filter, tent, sleeping bag, etc), but is there anything really simple that you find people often overlook that can make a huge difference to survival or enjoyment of trips?

McMurdo Station Network Administrator here: We've got an 18 down/10 up connection over the Optus D-1 satellite, shared by the entire station. That pipe takes everything, including phones, business intranet, scientific data, and recreational internet. Speedy, it is not.

No pet penguins, harassing the wildlife is a pretty good way to get yourself fired. Besides, they're some of the smelliest (and dumbest) animals I've ever been around, I can't imagine wanting one for a pet.

Really appreciate the advice! I hadn't thought about fire starting stuff, definitely going to google everything you recommended and get something to carry with me.

I like the InReach not just for the SOS, but so my friends and family can track my progress on maps and for the bi-directional texting.

Underemployment problems aren't a problem for almost anyone in a medical field. Get your BS in Nursing and pass the NCLEX and recruiters are almost lined up outside trying to hire you.

You think you'll ever come back? I know I'd like to do the pole thing at some point but I really like the seasonality of mac town.
