Whether in IT, or restaurant biz, you wind up either laying the bricks or figuring out how/when/where to lay the bricks for someone else to lay.

What I mean is that if you understand the business side of things, you can rise up that ladder and become part of the management. I am a Director of IT and although I am ridiculously overrun, I do like the control I have in making decisions and moving the company in cool new directions. (it's hard, but fun and rewarding)

Same thing now in your new job... If you see process improvements why not communicate them? What if your ideas worked, and they came to you for more ideas and the next thing you know you're the new Operations Manager or something.

My point is not about ambition or greed, it's about the rewards of seeing your ideas make positive change and growing your influence.

This is a pretty good case for keeping the private sector out of public safety. They manage towards eliminating risk, and maximizing profits, great attributes for managing banks, manufacturing and businesses in general, but guarding the beaches should be handled by local governments. Jeff Ellis and Associates' contract is up for renewal this year. Hopefully common sense will prevail and it won't be renewed.
