Your story mentions that the Syrian government finally issued death certificates for a few hundred people under pressure from Moscow. In the current situation, does Russia have the best leverage over Assad? Is there any agitation at all from that side to reign in this torture system?

That was my fear, but I guess I was hoping that the extremity of the sadism and the industrial scale of the system might provoke even Russia and Iran into action.

Is the only hope (and I cringe at using that word in this context), that an end to the civil war and normalization of relations with Europe might return Assad's prison/torture apparatus into the smaller system instituted under his father? Fewer wholesale roundups of average people, more "efficient" targeted political torture?

Is that where the world is now?

So, a few years later, are you guys happy with the famous New Yorker article for bringing attention to the matter? Or did it provoke too much unnecessary fear?

In general, how do you calibrate the level of fear in your messaging?

You're not supposed to care about her. You're supposed to care about the story. Seriously, just read the article, tell me you don't care...
