It's an important distinction. The Wehrmacht (specifically the Heer) were trained, professional soldiers. The SS however was deliberately composed of brainwashed adolescents, murders and sadists. Some units were actually exclusively composed of violent, sadistic criminals.

I'm not saying the Heer never killed any civilians (however they were ordered I believe directly by Hitler to provide logistical support to the SS).. but the SS death squads (Einsatzgruppen or "task forces") were responsible well for over a million deaths in the field. Perhaps 2 million.

 

The worst example has to be the Babi Yar massacre.. 33,000 people were murdered in a ravine. In two days. Over the course of the war it's estimated that anything up to 150,000 people were butchered in what amounts to a fucking ditch.

I was just reading the Wikipedia article on Majdanek. Interestingly the company that manufactured the cremation ovens for the camp is still going.. and they make air heaters.
