This sounds like the type of behavior "got the world figured out" teenagers do. Perhaps it's a part of growing up that he's had delayed?

That's what I was thinking. And like you said pretty much everyone seems to go through it to some extent. I just don't know how much of that stems from the lack of independence that accompanies being a minor and how much is actually hormonal.
