This. Similar in German - You don't get far if you try to translate. I was always rather bad in german classes, never used any english outside of (very basic) school classes until i was around 15 and since then got to a much near native level in reading/writing, nearly accentless speaking (which is hard as german native speaker, same for Russian/Ukrainian) and just have small issues understanding very weird accents.
