To your mom: what do dreams look like? As a sighted person in my head it's like a film. Has she ever dreamed of colors??

People absolutely refuse to accept that wheelchairs are effectively a part of the human being that is sitting in them. You wouldn't use someone's crutch/cane to lean on or touch it to move them, why the hell would you with a wheelchair?

A friend of mine got those spiked belts (like the ones you get from hot topic) and modified them to slip over the handles on his wheelchair. Now they weren't really sharp, and you could sneeze in their general direction and they would just pop off, but it kept strangers from touching his chair without asking. People would COMPLAIN to him that he was being hostile because he was showing how much he wasn't consenting to his wheelchair being touched.

Not OP or in a wheelchair but grew up with several friends in wheelchairs because my mom was a home health care nurse.

Just stand. Squatting or leaning over can make it feel like you are treating them like a child. The only reason I would think to ever do this is if you need to whisper for some reason or if it's really loud to talk right next to their ear, but you wouldn't do that in normal conversations either.
