I can't find much on it, (Warning: Buzzfeed.)but it sounds like it was a joke about basketball players who are forced to wear hats, and part of their points comes from making sure the hats don't fall off.

The original AVClub article looks like it was deleted. I'll keep looking for a better source.

I’m sure you probably didn’t intend to frame it this way, but to classify categories as “...Asian, or normal...” makes the singled out group(s) implied to be “not normal.” Maybe not a super obvious distinction, but I think it’s something important to keep in the back of one’s mind.
