Another big factor is that these days the military is volunteer and kind of cordoned off into their own area of society that doesn't mix with everybody else's. In WWII everybody essentially went, and so while everybody's experience was different, everyone their age could somewhat relate to them. And thus there were much more potential societal attachments, and less feelings of alienation. Or at least idk that's the sociology theory anyway
