I think there is something wrong with the system - we don't have great public funding of research, although we are far ahead of most countries. So private companies front most of the R&D want their money back. The solution is more funding for the NIH, but it's easier to whine that the evil corporations and scientists are screwing us.

Why would the pharmaceuticals jack up prices to the point where rich countries like the UK refuse to pay for their drug? Is it because the pharmaceutical bosses are evil, like OP would have you believe, or is it maybe because scientists also need to feed their families, and charging the price of gum for a drug that took a company a couple of decades to produce after thousands of failed drugs makes it economically unviable?

I'm a physician. There will be a cure for CF. My only fear is that know-nothings like OP and her idiot Doctor friends will drive away any pharmaceutical company from inventing this cure because it would bankrupt them.

In one of your other comments, you said that Orkambi only increases lung function by 3%. Isn't it a little unfair to ask taxpayers to pay $300 K/yr (because let's be real, your journalism salary certainly isn't paying for that) for a drug that has marginal benefit for a patient who will never have a normal lifespan? In other words, why should we divert millions of dollars from checkups for healthy kids, healthcare for the elderly, and supplies for dialysis patients for zero benefit?
