Why are there millions of illegal immigrants in the US?

I'm a legal non-immigrant and I know the hoops we have to jump through and all the USCIS red tape and beureaucracy. It surprised me to know that millions have entered or overstayed illegally.

I can understand DACA, those were kids bought her by parents. But what about all the adults who overstayed, how did the US fail to deport them.

For a country that has so many systems in place to collect data I imagine it's not easy to detect those who have overstayed. I think it's lack of political will. I mean, if the government wants it can pull up information with seconds and locate me. Now the whole illegal immigration things has snowballed and become a expensive problem to deal with.

I guess my question is not how they got here, but how are they able to stay for so long.
