From what I can remember, the old rift wouldnt track if you were moving your head back and forth, so it would become disorienting to the user. The second change I think is that the new rift very quickly turns the screen on and off, imperceptible consciously, but makes your brain fill in the gaps and helps with motion blur etc, which affected motion sickness.
