We've got a HUGE conservative streak in NY (both city and state). Sure, there's the uber rich that're happy with Law and Order (because they're rich enough to not break laws that Law and Order comes after), but there's also wide swaths of the old school outer boroughs that, sure, they vote D, but are against just about every modern 'progressive' movement.

Hell, remember that a lot of the people who voted in Rudy "stop and frisk is a great idea" Giuliani are still alive and voting. (I'm leaving off his trump escapades as he wasn't as OBVIOUSLY comically evil back then).

As a white guy who lives in Queens there's plenty of people that're happy to say the quiet part out loud if they think it's only 'us' around. I'm now in a job where I can freely tell them to pound sand, so that's nice.
