So in France carnations are specifically funeral flowers and it's considered very rude to give them to someone who isn't dead. I think some of that still carries over, in general when they came up in conversations people didn't like them. Looking through some other descriptions, seems like other western cultures use them frequently for sympathy as well.

They are also cheap, and it's not just OP that has a negative connotation of them. I don't want to open the can of worms that is reddit and inexpensive things, though. Being a lady, I would suggest not carnations unless you know the person you're giving flowers to likes them - there are safer choices.

My SO likes orchids, sunflowers, some daisies and cool succulents. I also sometimes send them with some interesting jerky.

I used to have the hardest time with them. Then I had one that said to use ice cubes to water it and gave me how many ice cubes and how often (you can just google it for different sizes, probably), and it became super easy to care for. Then I went out of town, roommate forgot, and it died :(

Cincinnati's OTR is an amazing case of downtown revitalization - the teams that worked on it would (and may still?) consult with other cities looking to do similar things. I know they were brought to Houston, where I live, and a lot of their approach helped revitalize part of our downtown.
