Smaller-scale competitions where you can have an easier time learning and meeting other builders occur all over the U.S. I got my start 13 years ago at, of all places, a comic/sci-fi convention (Dragon Con in Atlanta), after having watched the show for all 5 seasons.
These smaller bots are much, much cheaper and easier to build (as well as handle). I'd say you can get a reasonably competitive entry together for $300-500.
