Fascinating thread - thanks for doing this AMA! I saw your responses about why do this, but could you talk about what made you think of it? Something started this thought for you, to lead you specifically to kidney donation. Dream? Article in the news? Billboard ad?

Hi Gary, good to see this AMA and I'll be interested in the new book. Very much enjoyed GCBC and the Case Against Sugar. In fact, I was inspired by the pair to try a keto-ish/paleo-ish diet myself based on the possibilities of improved long-term health. My experience was pretty eye-opening.

The good: I just felt good! After some initial turmoil and settling on some good-quality foods, my energy and stamina increased substantially. My strength started improving too, where my gentle weight-lifting prior had been going nowhere. That was all great and I would recommend it.

The bad: Calorie-counting, macro-calculating, nutrient nazi tendencies! I had to give it up because I can't be trusted with a food tracking app and I couldn't even approximate the right macros without.

[ Bonus ugly: most recipe recommendations are pretty horrible. Never had so many bad meals as while trying to find "keto recipes" online. And very expensive trying to follow published recipes with all their hard-to-find substitutions. ]

Long term, I did completely eliminate soda and significantly reduced my dependence on carbs as the main driver of a meal - not many pasta dinners here these days. So your earlier works have had some long-term effect on my life and hopefully health - thank you for that!

My question for you is how have you seen people succeed long-term with sticking to this type of diet. Who can do it? What do they do differently from the others? How close to a truly ketogenic state do you need to manage to benefit?

ETA: woops, OP gone in an hour. Nevermind then.

How severe a security mistake is using the 'sign in with Google' option vs a traditional username/password? Or is that what Google is doing on the users' behalf? I'm a Dashlane user from way back (when the whole thing was free, in fact), but sometimes the simplicity of just hitting one button is overwhelming. ;)

Such an important topic and so difficult to handle without appearing to 'take sides' ahead of the data. Did you find any trends regarding the officers involved in shootings? Experience as LEO, prior experience with/without weapons, multiple involvements for certain officers...anything that would point to a training or testing solution?

I wondered this as well - shots fired seem relevant, even if no one is injured. Is that data just not retained, maybe?
