(not op)

I went to a top-tier school for computer science starting in 2010. While today I make the kind of salary you'd expect given that, I feel that my education was pretty awful at making me worthwhile as a computer scientist.

Research in CS is amazingly interesting, abstract courses are helpful in teaching concepts and, my peers were incredibly to work with. All of that being said, I spent a lot of time on things that really did not prepare me to build things that matter. I'd have loved a course that covered development methodologies, spent more time on how software is really built, taught us about legacy code and how to use it, dozens of things.

I learned a lot in my degree but, I feel that the lack of practical knowledge made it far harder to become a valuable member of my team initially.

Unfortunately the survivors with us today were all very young prior to the war. Dachau (the first death camp) was opened 90 years ago. As you can imagine it was "too late" by then

Israel has a military court just like most countries. Unlike most countries, it actually punishes people.

Source: Asked some friends in the IDF. Source may be full of shit.

I forget the name of what I was watching but there was a great program where they took kids/teens from both sides and had them all get together every so often to discuss what was going on. Whenever fighting broke out, they were all very concerned about their friends on the other side.

Sadly, there are those who do not wish for there to be peace or land exchanges on both sides :(

EDIT: Just to add a little more information consider the following: In the united states we are currently in a political deadlock because the extremists are refusing to let anything happen. Before those extremists were part of the discussion, things went pretty well.

In the current conflict, if the most extreme elements were removed (Hamas (and it's ilk) and the haridim (ultra-orthodox jews)) peace would be a very real goal. As it stands, it is unlikely.

There is a lot of chocolate. Like to the point that you start to hate it. Most of the meals are very calorie dense (like that of any army) but can still be reasonably tasty.

Field day lunches are pretty bad though. You tend to carry a gerry can full of water for your unit along with a few raw veggies (sometimes you get peppers, sometimes onions, it varries a little), some bread and "meat". Of course there is chocolate either in a spread or some other form.

Most of the bases where training goes on have some form of store where you can buy bourekas (phyllo dough stuffed with cheese, potato or meat), pizza or other snacks a few times a week.
