Thank you for confirming what I've always hoped: That most people in the states that have a "backwards" reputation are actually not like that.

I got a job similar to OPs with zero experience, just a bachelor's degree in a completely unrelated field and a lot of saying "I just want to help people". Try the search term "behavioral interventionist". Unfortunately I hated the job, and had I had some schooling in the subject I might have known it would not be a good fit for me. Of course, the residential facility I worked at was different. These kids were there for a year or more, were often violent (I finally quit after being assaulted by a teenager), and had no desire to be "helped". They were just riding it out until medicare stopped paying for it when they turned 18 and were put out on their asses (or right back into an abusive family situation). I was a glorified babysitter/chauffeur/secretary in a severely broken system. I know this sounds awful, but the reality is you're more likely to be working someplace like I did than OPs, at least until you've got more specialized training and can work your way up. But they will do their best to kill your ambition before you get that far. You need to be really, really sure it's what you want, and be ready to suffer for it in every way possible.
