Not the OP, but I've been in the industry for over 15 years.

2/3 of a full trailer of furniture would be somewhere between 15-20k lbs worth of stuff depending on density. That's actually a pretty decent price for that amount of weight traveling 1,000 miles.

Did your mom have the moving company do any packing or unpacking on the move? That could easily account for $1,000 of the price right there.

Most importantly though, did your mom's stuff get picked up and delivered on time? Did everything arrive? Was anything broken?

These are the important questions to ask - if the answer to all of those questions is "yes" besides her stuff getting broken, then your mom didn't get ripped off.
