I believe it may be because now a days Senators only pander to the population of their states instead of actually advocating for them in the Senate. Back in the day, Senators were chosen by state legislatures which allowed a direct link from the state to Washington.

Many prominent members of the Republican party have taken strong stances against reforming our immigration system, why do you think that the party of supposedly free enterprise is so against reforming a system that even they admit is broken?

I've just read the article on this and I have to say, her argument on Catholicism is severely lacking. Judge Andrew Napolitano is a prominent Catholic Libertarian who has talked about this before. I'm linking this to the start of his view on abortion and the interview then moves on to how he reconciles the two. Of course his talk doesn't totally cover what Bruening said about welfare, but to that argument it should be noted that modern welfare systems didn't arise until the early 20th century. Before this, it was the role of the Church and private individuals to help the poor, not the government. So while the Church champions welfare for the poor, there are no mandates in the catechism to say that secular governments are morally obligated to provide social welfare programs. Here's a good article which my argument parallels with citations included.
