Which begs the question, how did you cope when you found an unavoidable obstacle in the road (like it being closed for roadworks)?

Did you have go around the block and come back the other way or come back to it at a later date?

Did he have to have a matching blood type or any other type of requirements? I can't remember if that's a thing or not.

I sell stock photography on Shutterstock too so I'll try and offer my advice :)

  • I know it's harsh, but don't expect to make a lot of money! Unless you're pumping in hundreds of items a week, it'll be a slow start. It took me a good few months to meet the minimum payout ($35).

  • Try to find a niche. Pictures of food or pets won't make you mega bucks. I'm guilty of uploading things like that too, but I found a particular photo of a goalpost was by far my best seller. So I went to the same football pitch and photographed the shit out of it - chances are if you look for "British 5-a-side football game" you'll probably find a few of mine on the first page!

  • That said, don't shy away from uploading a photo because you think it won't sell. I've had many sales where I think "what in the shuddering fuck will someone do with that?". If you think the photo will get accepted, get it uploaded! You never know!

  • Also on that last point, quantity sometimes trumps quality. Shutterstock accepts thousands of photos a day, so having a tiny portfolio is going to get lost in a sea of footage.

  • The reviewers are extremely anal. If there's even a hint of a logo, they'll reject it. For example, I've had items denied because of a logo, on a padlock, on a wide shot of a farm gate. So double check before you upload your images.

If I think of anything else I'll add it here. I'd say definitely give it a go, as long as you go in it to have fun.
