Is a number field sieve truly the fastest way to factor large numbers on silicon? I know there are project like cado nfs, but am curious as to if they can be accelerated to factor larger numbers in the meantime while quantum computers are not quite here yet(as far as I know, I could be totally wrong).

As a follow up what parts of a number field sieve make it hard to be paralleled or put on an fpga/asic/gpu? Thanks!
