I had that question for years, why are electronics, camera, and lens rentals so much more expensive than let's say a car rental? The car costs 40-50k and you can rent one for $30-$50/day. But a lens that's maybe 5-10k costs $100/day?

I have one, why is it so hard to get a utility patent but so easy for singers, songwriters, photographs to protect their work? For a patent, it has to be new, has some level of inventiveness, and then it's only protected for 10 years. And it also cost a shitload of money to get it in the first place. Many songs are not unique or pictures, the same picture of for example the Eifel tower is protected by copyright for 70 years after the creator died.

If a renter breaks the gear do they not have to pay for the replacement? Or insurance?

That's why is a double scam in the U.S, normally when you gamble, the winning is based on the odds minus a little chance for the Casino. But Lottery on a normal day without a big Jackpot is way worse. Every week the winner should get 290 million if they would play fair. And then, of course, they also tax the winning, which is scammy. In Germany for example the lottery winnings are tax-free because the government already profits from the game so much.
