For what it's worth, I asked a similar question to a different astronaut (Clay Anderson) and he said something along these lines: During the day the light from the sun/earth washes out the stars (just like on earth), during night you can see a high amount of stars but all the windows face toward earth so you can't get a good view of it.

How did you get your awesome jobs? I am an aerospace engineering undergrad and I would love to work on this mission some day, or just for NASA in general.
